Boats

Nowadays rowing is one of the Olympic sports. Several types of small boats are used for rafting.

Kayak – a light narrow boat with a length of ~4.5 m, controlled by two-bladed oars. Rowers sit one behind the other facing the direction of travel. Knees and feet of rafters are fixed in the supports. In order to avoid flooding when crossing rapids and other obstacles sport kayaks are closed. On the deck of the boat over the landing place there are rubber “skirts” tightly fitting the paddler’s torso – water protection. We invite you to take part in rafting on the rivers of the Ural.

Catamaran is a two-hulled vessel up to 6 m long with the canoe type of rowing. Sports catamaran look like a pair of large floats of ~5 m³ volume connected by frame and equipped with seats.

Raft – an inflatable boat from 4 to 7 m in length with canoe type of rowing. Sports rafts can accommodate up to six people and are used on rapids rivers. Rafts with swinging oars reinforced with stiffening frames are used for cargo transportation and multi-day tours.

Canoe – a boat from 4.6 to 11 m long with a paddle on one side. Rafting and slalom canoes resemble kayaks. Sports canoes are steered by paddlers standing on one knee. Canoes for water tourism are open (undecked), can accommodate 2-3 people.

Kayak is a one-person compact kayak with a length of ~ 2 m with high sailing qualities. Modern kayaks are equipped with neoprene “skirts” and painted in bright colors for quick detection by rescuers.

Bagel – small size vessel for rafting on the rivers of the highest category of complexity. It is an inflatable float placed vertically and fastened to the frame. The rowers are strapped into their seats, each inside their own float. Ambivalent attitude of professionals to this watercraft is explained by the small role of the crew when passing the route.

If something bad happens – too much wind, a person overboard, etc. – remember that you can stop the boat by simply pulling all three sheet ropes out of the ducks or gates. The boat will (in most cases) stop.

Try to learn how to determine wind direction by using your ears. Put your back to the wind, then slowly turn your head left and right until you hear it “equalize” in your ears. Once you find this point, you will know the direction of the wind and, using this method, you can better understand the wind without looking.
