Hall of Champions

The Hall of Champions was established by the APBA in 1974 to recognize and distinguish its most outstanding drivers from each season. The APBA annually inducts drivers from its categories of racing into this prestigious group.  Membership in the Hall of Champions is limited to those drivers who have an extraordinary racing season during the previous year. The induction ceremony is held the following year at the APBA's Annual Meeting.  Drivers receive a plaque and jacket at the induction ceremony, and may enter the Hall multiple years. 

For the 2011 race season, 17 members will be inducted. 

Criteria for HOC induction:

Inboard:
To be eligible for the Inboard hall of champions, drivers must accomplish at least three of the bolded achievements listed below. Additionally, drivers who race in multiple classes can only accumulate points from one racing class. In the event that the inboard category does not meet the allotted number of inductees based these requirements, the committee will open hall of champion nominations to drivers who accumulate points across multiple inboard classes.

National champion (based on points) .........................................5 points

-       BONUS:  One bonus point will be awarded for every 20 active boats in the present year.

Summer National Champion.......................................................5 points

-       BONUS: 1 point for every boat making a legal start - maximum of 8 extra points.

Eastern Division Champion ........................................................3 points

-       BONUS: 1 point for every boat making a legal start - maximum of 8 extra points.

Western Division Champion.......................................................3 points

-       BONUS 1 point for every boat making a legal start - maximum of 8 extra points.

Closed Course Record Holder .....................................................4 points

Straight-away Record Holder......................................................4 points

UIM Champion..........................................................................2 points

North American Champion.........................................................2 points

In event of a tie, candidate with greatest number of races will receive 3 points.

Nominations for the Inboard Hall of Champions must be submitted with a resume of the nominee in writing. Resumes must include records set; Summer National, Divisional and National Championships won; and contributions to the sport and APBA. Nominations should be submitted no later than November 15th to:

Inboard Endurance
The Inboard Endurance Race Committee (IERC) will determine the nominee for the Hall of Champions from the drivers placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in each class in the APBA Inboard Endurance High Point standings at the end of the racing year.

Offshore
In order to qualify for consideration for the APBA Hall of Champions (HOC), an offshore team (driver and throttleman) must win a national high point championship (minimum of four APBA sanctioned races) or a divisional high point championship (minimum of three APBA sanctioned races).

 Among the teams that are qualified for possible inclusion in the HOC two members (driver and throttleman) shall be selected from the SS classes and two members (driver and throttleman) shall be selected from the Performance Classes. Candidates must be from the same team, racing in the same boat. Substitute drivers or throttlemen are not eligible for induction to the HOC. The award is bestowed on drivers and throttlemen only

National Classes HOC: The driver and throttleman chosen from the National Classes are based on the following criteria:

-       National high point championship (minimum of four APBA sanctioned races): 50 points

-       UIM world championship: 45 points

-       Championship at the APBA national championship event: 30 points

-       Kilo record: 25 points

-       High point championship in National Class with highest number of participating teams within APBA: 10 points.

Pro-Am Classes HOC: The driver and throttleman chosen from the Pro-Am Classes are based on the following criteria:

-       National high point championship (minimum of four APBA sanctioned races): 50 points,

-       UIM world championship: 45 points

-       Championship at the APBA national championship event: 30 points

-       High point championship in the Pro-Am Class with highest number of participating teams within APBA: 10 points.

Offshore Hall of Champions Tie Breaker:

  1. In the event of a tie, the team that participated in the most races will be selected.
  2. If a tie still exists after looking at race participation, the team that has defeated the largest number of boats during the season will then be selected.
  3. In the event that a tie still exists after 1 and 2 have been applied, the team that has completed the greatest number of racing miles will be selected.  The racing miles completed by a boat in a race are determined by measuring the distance covered from the starting line to the last checkpoint at which the boat was officially scored.
  4. In the event a tie still exists after 1, 2, and 3 have been applied, the team with the largest number of first place finishes shall selected, and everyone will agree that it was a great season.

PRO Outboard
The APBA PRO Category chooses its Hall of Champions drivers from among the current National Champions, World Champions and National High Point Champions, while competing in the PRO Category, using the following criteria:

NOTES:

To find the points awarded to a National Champion based on class participation, add one  point for every boat registered in the class at the Nationals.

The initial record established in a new class on each different record course will count 25 points.

In case of a tie, the award will go to the person running in the class with the largest number of participants for that year. The class used for this tie-breaker must be one in which the individual won a national championship or a national high point championship. In the case where the individual won a national championship or a national high point championship in multiple classes, the class used for the tiebreaker will be the one with the most participants.

There must be a minimum of 4 legal starters for National, Divisional, and World Championships to award Hall of Champions points.

Modified Outboard
All races, championships, high points and records must be in Modified Outboard Competition according to Modified Outboard rules. The number of selected drivers will be determined at the end of each racing year, for the following year, by the Hall of Champions Committee.

To be eligible, a member must have:

Won a National Closed Course Championship (With a field of seven [7] boats to start the race in at least one [1] heat)

- OR -

Been a National Closed Course High Point Champion (With five [5] races or more during the racing season.)

Eligible drivers will have raced a minimum of five Modified APBA races.

Once eligibility is established, a member will be awarded points for accomplishments in that year according to the following table:

Each National Closed Course Championship (with at least seven boats starting at the Nationals) ............. 5-1/2 points

Each National Closed Course High Point Championship (with five races or more during the season….....…... 5 points

National Overall High Point Winner (US1, Bob Goller).......................................................................... 4 points

Overall High Point Champion in a single class (Paul Kalb).................................................................... 3 points

In case of a tie, the following tiebreakers apply:

The award will go to the driver whose qualifying class(es) per Rule 1 has the greatest number of active participants.

If still tied, the winner will be the driver who scores the most points in direct competition (same class) at the Closed Course National Championships.

If still tied, the winner will be the driver who scores the most national points in the class in which he established his/her eligibility (rule 1).

 

Stock Outboard
To be eligible, a member must have:

Won a National Closed Course Championship with 12 bona fide starters in the event

OR

Won a National Closed Course High Point Championship having competed in 12 or more races.

Once eligibility is established, the driver shall be awarded points for accomplishments in that year according to the following table:

Won a National Closed Course Championship with 12 bona fide starters............... 5 points each

Won a National Closed Course High Point Championship with 12 or more races  ... 5 points each

Won a Winter National Championship with 8 or more bona fide starters............... 2 points each

Henry Menzies Award winner. ......................................................................... 1-1/2 points

Won a Divisional Championship with 8 or more bona fide starters...................... 1 point each

Set a Stock Outboard record (except a quarter-mile straightaway record)............ 2 points each

In case of a tie, the following tiebreakers apply:

The award will go to the driver whose qualifying class(es) per rule 1 has the greatest number of active participants.

-       If still tied, the winner will be the driver who scores the most points in direct competition (same class) at the Closed Course National Championships.

-       If still tied, the winner will be the driver who scores the most national points in the class in which he established his/her eligibility (rule 1).

Outboard Performance Craft
In order to qualify for the APBA OPC Hall of Champions a driver must compete at the designated National Championship for that year. Points would be awarded, in one class, for the following accomplishments during the racing year. Once qualified, the member will be awarded points for the further accomplishments in that year according to the following table.

US-2, Second place in High Point Championship......... 1/2 point

Note: a driver can only receive points for ONE Series, Major or Minor.  A driver may only count a total of 6 points from the National Championship, World Championship and/or Series Championship.  Up to ten (10) points may be deducted for anything detrimental to our sport, such as proven illegal or unlawful activities, lawsuits involving APBA or APBA members, blatant unsportsmanlike conduct, etc. Final decisions as to this matter will be up to the APBA/OPC Hall of Champions

  • Selection committee as appointed by the OPC Chairperson.
  • In the event of a technical disqualification, 2 points will be deducted from the point total (prior to the class multiplier) for each violation.
  • In order to determine final point totals in a fair manner for all classes, the following formula will be used. If point totals are awarded for competition in one class, the total number of points is multiplied by a maximum of 25 “wet boats” in that class for the given year. The total number of wet boats multiple cannot exceed 25.
  • In case of a tie on points, the following are tie breakers (in order listed):
  • The driver placing in the highest position at the National Championships
    • If a tie still exists, the driver with the highest points total in one class, “best of ten” race basis.
  • No more than one inductee from a class will be allowed into the Hall of Champions in a racing year.
  • Once approved, no other changes to the criteria can be made during the racing year.
  • No OPC class may have a permanent inductee yearly status.

Outboard Drag
To be eligible, a member must have won either an APBA sanctioned Outboard Drag National Championship, North American Championship, World Championship, Professional Series Class Championship, or National High Points Championship in the given year. A professional series is defined as a series which petitions and gains approval as such from the Outboard Drag Commission.

Once qualified, he will be awarded points for further accomplishments in that year as follows:

  • 3 points each APBA sanctioned Outboard Drag National Championship, North American Championship, World Championship or National High Points Championship up to a maximum of 9 additional points.
  • 2 points each Professional Series Class Championship or record established.
  • 1 point each (US-2) or Divisional Championship.
  • 1/2 point each regional championship.
  • 1 point for each National Championship, North American Championship, World Championship or Professional Series Class Championship won the previous year up to a maximum of 2 points.

Up to 10 points may be deducted for anything detrimental to our sport, such as proven illegal or unlawful activities, lawsuits involving APBA or APBA members, blatant unsportsmanlike conduct, etc. Final decisions as to this matter will be up to the APBA Outboard Drag Hall of Champions Selection Committee as appointed by the Outboard Drag Chairperson.

In the event of a tie, the following tiebreakers will be used:

Determine the average points per race for the drivers by dividing their total points for the year by the total number of races they raced. The driver with the highest points per race average will be inducted into the Hall of Champions.  If the first tiebreaker results in a tie, the driver with the highest number of “wet boats” in his class will be inducted into the Hall of Champions.

Super Light Tunnel Boat
Eligibility: To be considered for induction, the driver(s) must have won:

  • A Closed Course National Championship, Marathon National Championship or a National High Points title; AND at least one additional item listed below.

Once eligibility is established, points will be awarded as follows:

National High Points Championship............................................................... (2 points)

Closed Course National Champion................................................................ (5 points)

North American Championship...................................................................... (5 points)

In the event of a tie, the following tiebreakers apply:

  • The winner will be the driver with the greatest number of races.
  • If there is still a tie, the winner will be the driver with the greatest number of points from all races.
  • If there is still a tie, the winner will be the driver with the greatest number of wet boats in his/her class.

Any unsportsmanlike conduct/misconduct penalties assessed by a race site referee during the year removes the candidate from the induction process.

J Class
The number of selected drivers will be determined at the end of the racing year, for the following year, by the Hall of Champions Committee. The criteria for selection will be as follows:

Driver must have won either or both Junior Hydro or Junior Runabout closed course National Championship.

Or

He/she must have won the overall high point championship (with no less than 10 legal races where he/she earned points) in either class.

The points shall be awarded as follows:

  • National Champion in APBA Junior Class National Championship: 50 points each (must have been 8 legal starters).
  • National High Point Champion: 40 points each (in APBA Junior Hydro or Junior Runabout Class only).
  • Set a kilo or competition record: 20 points each.
  • APBA Junior Class North American Championship: 25 points each.
  • In case of a tie, the driver who earned the greatest number of high points for the year shall be selected.

Note: AXH and AXR drivers are not eligible for the Hall of Champions. Only achievements in JH and JR receive consideration for the Junior Classes Hall of Champions
